Robert J. Kaiser Middle School students expand their palate — “a single bite” at a time

Students from Robert J. Kaiser Middle School recently enjoyed a unique farm-to-table learning experience through the Sullivan County-based “A Single Bite” program, giving seventh graders the opportunity to explore the benefits of locally grown foods in and out of the classroom.

The program began with classroom lessons led by the staff from A Single Bite, where students learned about nutrition, local agriculture and healthy eating habits. Students then visited the farm at the Center for Discovery to see firsthand where locally grown foods come from and how they are produced.

As part of the experience, students were treated to a special meal prepared for them at The Arnold House. During the meal, students were encouraged to try at least “a single bite” of foods they may have never tasted before. The program emphasizes exploration and openness to new experiences, reminding students that even if they do not enjoy a particular food, trying something new is an accomplishment in itself.

For many students, the experience introduced them to foods they discovered they genuinely enjoyed. Throughout the visit, RJK students demonstrated Panther Pride through their enthusiasm, positivity and willingness to participate in the experience.

The A Single Bite program is offered to all seventh grade students throughout Sullivan County schools and concludes with a final wrap-up classroom visit to reflect on what students learned during the experience.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this memorable learning opportunity possible for our students. The food was delicious, and the experience left a lasting impression on many of our young Panthers.
