Students and staff at Emma C. Chase Elementary School spent the week celebrating neurodiversity during Autism Awareness Week, through themed spirit days, daily activities and lessons focused on kindness, inclusion and understanding.

Throughout the week, members of Karen Crofoot’s class shared poems each day during morning announcements, helping spread messages of acceptance and awareness across the building. Each day also featured a special theme tied to autism awareness and celebrating differences.
The week began with Pokémon Monday, and the halls of Chase School were filled with Pokémon-themed shirts, hats and accessories. The day highlighted the fact that Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri is neurodivergent and on the autism spectrum, encouraging students to recognize how different perspectives and talents can lead to creativity and innovation.

On Tuesday, students and staff celebrated Superhero Tuesday, dressing as superheroes while practicing random acts of kindness throughout the school. From helping classmates to offering encouraging words, students worked together to create a caring and welcoming environment for everyone.
Additional spirit days throughout the week included Blue Wednesday, Rainbow Day and Sensory Friendly Day, each designed to promote inclusion, understanding and support for all learners.

The celebration concluded with a special act of kindness organized through a donation arranged by Mrs. Kenisha Haynes. Ms. Crofoot’s students distributed gifts to children throughout the school, thanking them for helping celebrate Autism Awareness Week and for showing kindness to others.
Chase School’s Autism Awareness Week served as a reminder that small acts of kindness, understanding and inclusion can help every student feel seen, valued and supported.
