Fifth-grade students at the Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School recently completed the CATCH My Breath vaping prevention program, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy choices and avoid nicotine use.

The program, which concluded on June 5, was delivered over a five-week period beginning May 8. Through a series of evidence-based lessons, students learned about the risks associated with vaping and nicotine use, practiced decision-making strategies and explored ways to resist peer pressure.
Participating classrooms included those led by Mrs. Bowles and Ms. Sheppard, Mrs. Darnobid and Mrs. Peterman, Ms. Komatz, Mrs. Nunziata, Mrs. Kreeger, Mr. Longueira, Ms. Keane and Ms. Lospalluto.
Students were highly engaged throughout the program, participating in discussions and activities designed to build awareness and encourage healthy lifestyle choices.

The program was made possible through the support of Sullivan 180, a community wellness organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Sullivan County residents. Through partnerships with schools, municipalities and community organizations, Sullivan 180 promotes initiatives that encourage healthy habits, mental wellness and positive youth development.

CATCH My Breath is the only school-based youth vaping prevention program recommended in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Evidence-Based Resource Guide Series. According to research from the program’s pilot study, when implemented as intended, approximately 45% of students who may have otherwise experimented with e-cigarettes chose not to do so during the school year.
By providing students with accurate information and practical decision-making skills before they reach middle school, the program helps empower young people to make informed choices that support their long-term health and well-being.
