S’mores, stories and smiles at Cooke’s Literacy Night

Students and families gathered at the George L. Cooke Elementary School on May 6 for a fun-filled Literacy Night that brought reading to life through a camping theme and hands-on activities.

Families kicked off the night making (and of course, eating) s’mores around campfires in the school’s outdoor learning center.  Indoors, the library was transformed into an indoor campground with library tables masquerading as cozy tents perfect for snuggling up with a good book.

Students roamed the hallways — some with signature s’mores smiles — popping into different classrooms to listen to live music, make a themed headband, or participate in a number of other crafts. Staff members worked hard to create an inviting atmosphere that encouraged students and families to explore literacy in engaging and innovative ways.
