In New York State, public school districts are required by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to provide a minimum of 180 days of instruction each school year.
To meet this mandate, the Monticello Central School District carefully builds its annual calendar to include a designated bank of emergency (snow) days. These days serve as a cushion for weather-related closures and other unforeseen emergencies that may interrupt the regular school schedule. The calendar also includes dates designated as “take-back” days, which can become days of instruction if the district uses all of its allocated emergency closure dates.
The 2025-26 MCSD academic calendar includes seven (7) emergency closure (“snow”) days, and as of Feb. 20, has exhausted all scheduled snow days.*
- Should the district require one (1) more emergency closure, Friday, April 17 – which is currently a conference day – will become a day of instruction with students in attendance.
- Should the district require two (2) more emergency closures, Friday, April 17 and Monday, April 6 will become days of instruction with students in attendance.
- Should the district require more than two (2) more emergency closures, Friday, April 17 and Monday, April 6 will become days of instruction with student attendance, and any additional days will transition to days of remote instruction.
More information regarding remote instruction will be shared if necessary.
*Although the district was forced to close due to the winter storm on Monday, Feb. 23, the New York State Commissioner of Education granted a special waiver to impacted districts, citing factors such as this year’s challenging weather in our geographic area. Due to this waiver, Monday’s closure does not count towards the 180 day requirement.
