Two Monticello Central School District staff members have been recognized by the Sullivan County School Boards Association (SCSBA) for their dedication to students and the school community. George L. Cooke Elementary School kindergarten teacher Karen Ferentinos is receiving the Outstanding Educator Award, and Jami Welch, who supports the district’s athletic office, is receiving the Outstanding District Employee Award. The two were honored at the SCSBA’s Annual Awards dinner on Monday, Oct. 5 at the Villa Roma Resort.
Karen Ferentinos: Outstanding Educator

Since joining the district in 1990, Ms. Ferentinos has helped generations of Monticello students build a strong foundation for learning. She has taught all primary grade levels and served as a grade-level leader, sharing her experience and supporting fellow educators.
In her nomination, Cooke Principal Virginia Gallet highlighted Ms. Ferentinos’ thoughtful preparation, high expectations and compassion. Her classroom combines clear routines with a nurturing environment where students develop academically, socially and emotionally.
She devotes considerable time to preparing lessons, reviewing student progress and making sure each child receives the support they need. Her work begins well before students arrive in September, as she organizes materials and prepares her classroom for the year ahead.
“Her ability to balance high expectations with compassion creates a learning environment where students feel supported, challenged, and valued,” Ms. Gallet wrote.
Beyond her classroom, Ms. Ferentinos is a trusted mentor whose insight and willingness to help have made a lasting impact on colleagues and families throughout her more than 35 years of service.
Jami Welch: Outstanding District Employee

Much of Welch’s work takes place behind the scenes, but its impact reaches coaches, student-athletes and families throughout Monticello’s athletic programs.
In his nomination, Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Wellness Ryan Jasper praised Ms. Welch’s contributions during her three years in the athletic office. Her organization, attention to detail and ability to anticipate needs have helped make the department more efficient and welcoming.
From changing schedules and transportation issues to confirming officials and managing eligibility information, Ms. Welch helps keep the many moving parts of the athletic department running smoothly. Jasper noted that she approaches unexpected challenges calmly, often identifying potential obstacles before they arise.
“What truly sets Jami apart, however, is the way she treats people,” Mr. Jasper wrote.
She has built strong relationships across the school community through her care for students and her commitment to helping them have positive, memorable athletic experiences.
Congratulations to Ms. Ferentinos and Ms. Welch on these well-deserved honors, and thank you for the care and dedication you bring to Monticello’s students each day.
