Award-winning author and illustrator John Parra visits Cooke students

On a memorable day at George L. Cooke Elementary School, award-winning author and illustrator John Parra captivated students with an engaging presentation.

An accomplished illustrator, fine artist, designer, author, and educator, Parra is celebrated for his vibrant, Latino-themed children’s picture books and has received numerous prestigious accolades, including three Pura Belpré Honors from the American Library Association, two Golden Kite Awards from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, two Christopher Awards, the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award, and the esteemed 2023 Américas Award (Parra, 2019).

During the visit, Parra read aloud from two of his beloved books, Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos and Hey, Wall, bringing the vibrant stories to life for his young audience. He worked collaboratively with students to create two original pictures, demonstrating his artistic process and inspiring creativity throughout the gymnasium.

Parra also shared his personal journey, describing how he developed his passion for illustration and eventually became both an author and illustrator, offering students valuable insight into the creative careers they might pursue.
