For the second year in a row, the Wood family has been turning trash into treasure for the students of Emma C. Chase Elementary School.
Linda and Dennis Wood presented the staff of Chase with a $750 donation that they raised by collecting more than 15,000 cans and bottles throughout Wurtsboro. $500 of the donation will support the school’s “Snack Pack” program, which provides students at risk of hunger with a backpack filled with food. The rest of the donation will support a Chase program such as music or art.
Mr. and Mrs. Wood understand that many local residents are forced to choose between paying their electric bill or feeding their family, which is why they recognize that every little bit of help can go a long way in the community.
The entire Wood family participates in the collection throughout the year, collecting donated bottles and cans from residents. This year, they are in the process of creating drop-off bins in an effort to facilitate even more bottle and can donations to support the Chase school. The Wood children — Michael, Kelly, and Richie have helped to paint the bins, which will eventually be placed throughout the Wurtsboro area. Currently, there is a red drop-off bin at the Wood residence, 36 Forest Drive, Wurtsboro, where residents may leave 5-cent-recyclable cans or bottles.
“If you want to make the world a better place, you have to step up,” Mr. Wood said. “There are little things that everyone can do to help out without feeling the financial pinch. We must lead by example. We thank all of the community members who have helped in this effort.”

Their kindness and generosity directly impact our students and we thank them for their generosity and continued support.”
