Statement re: building maintenance at SJS

Dear SJS Families,

We are writing to inform you of a recent building maintenance issue at St. John Street (SJS).

During our winter storm on Jan. 26, a water main break occurred in the early morning hours in an unused third-floor classroom in the building. As a precaution, that classroom and the areas directly below were immediately sealed, and the district began following all required safety and environmental protocols.

As part of this process, testing was conducted in the impacted spaces. We were notified of results today that indicated the presence of asbestos-containing materials, which is not uncommon in older buildings and does not pose a risk unless disturbed. Since the water main break occurred when school was not in session, and the areas were immediately quarantined before students and staff returned, no students or staff members have been exposed.

Please be assured that:

  • The impacted spaces are not in use
  • Students and staff do not have access to these areas
  • All actions are being taken in accordance with state and federal safety regulations
  • Licensed professionals are managing the situation and next steps

The health and safety of our students and staff remain our highest priority, and we will continue to follow all proper procedures to ensure a safe learning environment.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

Thank you for your understanding and continued partnership.

Ms. Miraglia
SJS Principal
