Monticello High School students Gavin Shupe, and Emma Stanton have been receiving some well-earned recognition from near and far! The two students, who jumped into action to prevent a potential tragedy when a bus driver suffered from a medical emergency, received a Board Award from the Monticello Board of Education at its March 19 meeting. Board Awards recognize remarkable members of the Monticello community.

At that same meeting, a contingent of Rock Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps (which Gavin is also a member of), presented the two with tokens of appreciation and words of gratitude. Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety 911& EMS, Alex Rau, also took the mic to announce that the students will be formally recognized at the next legislative meeting at the Sullivan County Government Center.

Several days later, the duo met with Assemblywoman Paula Kay, who surprised the students with an invitation to be formally recognized for their heroic actions at the state capitol.

In the upcoming weeks, the students will also meet with NYS State Senator Peter Oberacker.
The district extends its sincere thanks to the two students for showing unconventional bravery and heroism, and also to the many public officials and community members for their support and recognition of these acts.
