Programs and Opportunities at George Cooke Elementary School
Supporting the Whole Child — In School and Beyond
At George L. Cooke Elementary School, educating children means caring for the whole child. As a K–2 school, Cooke recognizes that students are most successful when their academic, social, emotional, physical, and basic needs are supported. Through enrichment programs, family engagement, community partnerships, and school-funded opportunities, Cooke works to remove barriers and ensure that every child has opportunities to learn, explore, grow, and belong.
YMCA Club Kid Before and After School Program
Cooke partners with the YMCA of Middletown to offer the Club Kid Before and After School Program, providing families with a safe, nurturing, and supervised environment for children beyond the regular school day.
Club Kid focuses on the YMCA’s core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty, while encouraging positive self-esteem, good sportsmanship, and respect for others.
The morning program gives students a positive start to their school day through activities such as arts and crafts, games, quiet activities, and time to prepare for the day ahead. After school, students have opportunities for snack time, homework time, arts and crafts, outdoor play, gym activities, and special events.
By offering care directly at Cooke before and after the regular school day, Club Kid provides an important resource for working families while giving children additional opportunities to socialize, play, create, and develop positive relationships in a familiar school environment.
Financial assistance is also available through the YMCA, helping make the program accessible to families who may otherwise face financial barriers to before- or after-school care.
D.A.R.E. Program
Cooke’s second-grade students participate in the D.A.R.E. program, presented by School Resource Officer Roy Rogers of the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.
Through age-appropriate lessons, students develop important decision-making, safety, and life skills while also building a positive relationship with a trusted member of local law enforcement. Introducing these concepts at an early age gives students another foundation for making safe, respectful, and responsible choices as they grow.
Book Vending Machine and Character Recognition
At Cooke, positive choices can lead to a brand-new book! The school’s book vending machine combines literacy with character education.
Staff members nominate students who demonstrate respect toward others or respect for their school. Selected students earn a special token that they can use to choose a book from the vending machine to keep as their own.
This program makes positive behavior visible and exciting while helping students build their own home libraries and reinforcing a lifelong love of reading.
After-School Enrichment Opportunities
Cooke provides students with opportunities to discover interests and talents beyond the traditional classroom through enrichment clubs and activities. Programs such as art, nature, and sports clubs encourage creativity, movement, teamwork, exploration, and new friendships.
These opportunities are especially meaningful at the elementary level, where exposure to a new activity can spark an interest that lasts for years.
School-Funded Field Trips
Cooke believes meaningful learning experiences should be available to all students, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances.
The school funds student field trips, allowing children to experience learning outside of the classroom without placing an additional financial burden on families.
Field trips give young students opportunities to explore their community and the world around them, connect classroom learning to real-life experiences, and create lasting childhood memories.
School Supplies for Every Student
At the beginning of the school year, Cooke provides students with the school supplies they need for the year.
Providing these materials helps alleviate the financial burden associated with back-to-school shopping and ensures that every child begins the school year prepared to learn.
Rather than a child’s access to supplies depending on a family’s ability to purchase them, Cooke works to create an equitable start for all students.
Social-Emotional Wellness
Social-emotional development is an important part of the Cooke experience. Students learn skills involving feelings, communication, teamwork, empathy, compassion, respect, problem-solving, and positive relationships.
Through classroom instruction and school-wide initiatives, children develop strategies that help them regulate emotions, interact successfully with peers, solve problems, and become caring members of their school community.
STREAM Night
Cooke invites students and their families back to school for STREAM Night, an evening dedicated to Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.
Families participate together in engaging, hands-on activities that encourage curiosity, creativity, experimentation, and problem-solving.
Dinner is provided for participating families, helping make the event accessible and allowing families to focus on spending time learning, exploring, and having fun together.
Literacy Night
Cooke’s Literacy Night brings students, families, and staff together to celebrate reading and encourage literacy beyond the school day.
Families participate in literacy-based activities designed to make reading engaging and enjoyable for young children while providing families with ideas they can continue using at home.
Dinner is provided for families, removing another potential barrier to participation and creating a welcoming evening where families can learn, connect, and enjoy books together.
PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program
Through a partnership with PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program, Cooke helps bring important dental services directly to students at school.
Participating students can receive dental services, including cleanings and dental care, during the school day. Bringing these services directly into the school reduces barriers to care: students do not have to miss an entire school day for an appointment, and parents or caregivers may not need to miss work to transport their child to a dental office.
The partnership also focuses on prevention and education. PRASAD provides dental-hygiene lessons to every classroom, teaching children at an early age about brushing, oral health, and habits that can contribute to lifelong wellness.
Basic Needs and Family Support
Cooke recognizes that a child’s ability to learn can be affected by circumstances far beyond the classroom. Through school programs, donations, and community partnerships, families can be connected with additional resources when needed.
Programs such as the Backpack Program and Cooke Cares Closet help provide access to food and everyday necessities such as toothbrushes, soap, socks, hats, gloves, underwear, and other hygiene products.
The goal is simple: when a barrier to learning can be addressed, Cooke works to address it.
Academic and Individualized Student Support
Students who need additional academic, behavioral, social, or emotional assistance receive support within the school environment.
Teachers, interventionists, related-service providers, support staff, and administrators collaborate to identify student needs, monitor progress, and provide targeted assistance.
Early intervention is particularly important in kindergarten through second grade, when children are developing the foundational literacy, mathematics, social, and learning skills they will rely upon throughout their education.
Health, Wellness and Outdoor Learning
Cooke continues to provide opportunities that promote movement, wellness, outdoor exploration, and hands-on learning.
Outdoor spaces and nature-based experiences allow young children to investigate their environment, be physically active, develop curiosity, and learn through play and exploration.
These experiences recognize something particularly important for young learners: meaningful learning doesn’t always happen while sitting at a desk.
Family and Community Partnerships
Families are an essential part of the Cooke community. Family nights, school events, the PTO, community organizations, and local agencies allow Cooke to extend the support available to children well beyond what can be provided through classroom instruction alone.
Partnerships with organizations such as the YMCA of Middletown, PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program, and the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office bring additional services, expertise, experiences, and trusted adults directly into the lives of Cooke students.
These partnerships connect school, home, and community around one shared goal: helping children thrive.
More Than a School
At George L. Cooke Elementary School, educating the whole child is more than a philosophy, it is reflected in what the school provides every day.
A child may need extra academic support. Another may discover a passion through an enrichment club or field trip. One may proudly use a token to select their very own book after being recognized for showing respect. Another may receive dental care at school that otherwise could have required both the child to miss instructional time and a parent to miss work.
A working family can have access to before- and after-school programming in the same familiar environment where their child attends school each day. A family can attend STREAM or Literacy Night, enjoy dinner together, and discover new ways to continue learning at home. And every student can arrive at school with the supplies they need to participate alongside their peers.
These programs may serve different purposes, but together they reflect the same commitment: identifying the barriers that can stand between a child and success and finding meaningful ways to reduce them.
