Students at the George L. Cooke Elementary School finally got their chance to enjoy the school’s second-annual Winter Fun Day, and it turned out to be well worth the wait!

Originally planned for earlier in the winter, the event had to be postponed several times due to this year’s challenging winter. While the delays tested everyone’s patience, students remained excited for the day when they would finally be able to head outdoors and celebrate winter together.
And when Winter Fun Day finally arrived, the timing couldn’t have been better. The sun was shining, the temperatures felt almost springlike, and there was still plenty of snow on the ground—creating the perfect setting for a day full of outdoor fun.

The event builds on the success of last year’s inaugural Winter Fun Day, which was supported through the school’s Empowering a Healthier Generation grant from Sullivan 180. The day itself was designed by a group of second-grade “Nature Ambassadors” who wanted to give their classmates more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months.
Activities ranged from sledding down the hill at Somerville Field to a variety of indoor winter-themed activities, all designed to help students stay active and connected to nature even during the colder months.

This year’s celebration carried on that same spirit. Laughter and cheers filled the air as students raced down the hill on sleds, played in the snow with friends, and enjoyed time outside with their teachers and classmates.

In the end, the weather delays that once seemed frustrating turned out to be a bit of good timing. With sunshine overhead, snow still covering the ground, and smiles everywhere you looked, Cooke’s second-annual Winter Fun Day proved that sometimes the best days are simply the ones worth waiting for.
