Four veterans visit KLR Elementary to inspire fourth graders

Students at Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School received a meaningful lesson in courage, service, and community in early November, as four United States military veterans visited the school to speak at a special fourth-grade assembly.

The presenters – E-3 Joseph Levi (HHC 2-1 Aviation Batalion 1st Infantry Division U.S. Army), Senior Chief Petty Officer Bradley Dromazos (U.S. Navy), Sergeant Josef Haas (Military Police, U.S. Army National Guard) and Captain Luis Alvarez (U.S. Army stationed in Puerto Rico)—each shared personal stories from their time in the military. They spoke about the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and supporting their communities both during and after their service. Students listened attentively as the speakers described both the challenges and the pride that come with military life. All four veterans shared pictures of their military experience and E-3 Levi brought in some gear for the students to see and touch.

All four veterans are longtime Sullivan County residents, making their visit especially meaningful for students who were excited to meet local heroes.

Teachers said the assembly was designed to help students connect their social studies lessons to real-world experiences. Many students prepared questions in advance, asking about everything from training to favorite memories.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to meet real heroes in our own community,” said school staff members following the presentation. “The veterans inspired our kids not only with their stories, but with their dedication to helping other.”

At the close of the program, students offered the guests handmade thank-you cards to show their appreciation. The school hopes to make the veterans’ visit an annual tradition.
