Monticello High School honors service and sacrifice at Veterans Day assembly

Monticello High School students, faculty, and staff came together on Friday, Nov. 7 for a meaningful Veterans Day assembly that honored the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The ceremony began by recognizing the veterans within the Monticello Central School District staff. These individuals were invited to stand and be acknowledged for their service. Their presence served as a powerful reminder that the impact of military service extends far beyond the battlefield and into classrooms, communities, and everyday life.

Following the recognition, cadets from the Civil Air Patrol delivered an informative presentation on the history of Veterans Day. The cadets highlighted the origins of the holiday, first known as Armistice Day, and explained how it evolved into a day dedicated to honoring all American veterans. Their presentation underscored the importance of continuing to remember, reflect, and educate future generations on the significance of service.

Members of the National Honor Society then guided the audience through the symbolism of the “Table for One” ceremony, a solemn tribute commonly seen at military events and memorials. Each element of the table, from the single red rose to the inverted glass, represents the hope, sacrifice, and memory of those who were prisoners of war or missing in action. As the students narrated the meanings, the room fell silent in reflection.

Two Boy Scouts led a flag-folding demonstration, carefully and respectfully showing each step of the folding process, as members of the National Honor Society explained the symbolism carried in the thirteen folds of the American flag, which honor life, faith, service, and remembrance.

The assembly also included a brief lesson on the history of “Taps,” the iconic bugle call played at military funerals and memorial services. Students learned how the simple, mournful melody has become one of the most recognized and poignant honors bestowed on service members.

The program concluded with guest veteran speakers who shared personal stories from their time in the military. They spoke about the lessons they learned, the challenges they faced, and the pride they carry in having served. Their words provided students with a first-hand appreciation for the lived experiences behind the uniform, offering both perspective and inspiration.

Monticello High School extends heartfelt gratitude to all veterans, within the district and throughout the nation, for their service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. The assembly served not only as a tribute, but also as an educational reminder that the freedoms we benefit from today were earned through courage, commitment, and selflessness.

A special thank you to all the students, staff members, volunteers and veterans who made this meaningful ceremony possible:
