Dear Monticello CSD Community and Staff Member,
Earlier this week, we closed the George Cooke Elementary School and pivoted all students to remote instruction, after one staff member tested positive for COVID-19, and another staff member was symptomatic. All direct contacts of the staff member who tested positive were contacted and have been advised to quarantine in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidelines. The symptomatic staff member was tested for COVID-19 on Monday, November 9, and, fortunately, the results are negative. Therefore, Cooke ES will resume in-person instruction on November 16. A separate classroom at Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School was placed under quarantine last week when one of its students tested positive for COVID-19.
As we enter the holiday season, and close windows and doors for heating, it is important that we remain vigilant in our efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We have implemented several safety and screening protocols to protect our students and staff, however these have little effect on how the disease might be transmitted outside of our schools. We are counting on you to help our students, our staff, and our community stay healthy.
Recently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control updated its guidance on Thanksgiving gatherings. While it recommends that the “safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is to celebrate with people in your household,” it also includes steps to be taken when attending a larger gathering. These include social distancing, facial coverings (except when eating), and staying out of food preparation areas.
If you plan on traveling during the holiday season, please be mindful of New York State’s travel advisories. One of the questions on our health questionnaire is about whether the individual has travelled to “a state covered by the COVID-19 Travel Advisory in the last 14 days.” If an individual answers, “yes,” to this question, they will be prohibited from coming to school for 14 days.
We also ask that you please remember these simple steps for reducing the spread of COVID-19:
- If you or your child are sick, stay home and seek medical attention.
- Maintain six-feet (6’) of social distancing with others at all times.
- Wear a face covering when in public—even when distancing.
- Wash your hands when soiled and before eating, and refrain from touching your face, eyes, and mouth.
Above all else, we want you and your family to stay healthy. We are all growing tired of dealing with this pandemic, but it will continue if we do not remain vigilant in these preventative measures.

A principios de esta semana, cerramos la Escuela Primaria George Cooke y pasamos a todos los estudiantes a la instrucción remota, después de que un miembro del personal dio positivo por COVID-19 y otro miembro del personal tuvo síntomas.
