Chase students celebrate Agriculture in the Classroom Week with CCE

a group of students are huddling around a woman who is holding a worm in her hand Barbara Moran from Cornell Cooperative Extension visited Julie Furman’s second-grade class at the Emma C. Chase Elementary School to celebrate Agriculture in the Classroom Week. Ms. Moran read the book Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table. The book chronicles the life of Will Allen, a former basketball star turned farmer who created a feast from a barren piece of abandoned urban land. The book explained the importance of composting, and Ms. Moran left the students with their own classroom compost bin, complete with red wriggler worms. The class will continue composting throughout the rest of the school year, providing rich soil from scraps for the school’s outdoor garden. As a bonus, the class got to meet Will Allen virtually shortly after Ms. Moran’s visit.
