A celebration of reading at KLR

March 19, 2018

Two students dressed as Dr. Seuss's Thing OneK.L. Rutherford Elementary School celebrated Read Across America on March 1. Several guest readers came to celebrate reading including Superintendent Tammy Mangus who shared an inspiring book with Mrs. Bitejman's and Mr. Bhandarkar's second grade class.

In the afternoon, the Build a Cat-in-the-Hat Cookie event was held for students who participated in KLR's Read Across America reading challenge. For three weeks in February, the 38 students read more than 800 books. Mrs. PuaPuaga's and Mrs. Kavleski's classes had the most participants.

Our Assistant Principal Mr. Murphy and Security Staff member Davon Knight treated the reading participants to a dance off. Mr. Murphy showed off great "old school" moves but Davon was the favorite with his hip hop style. The students enjoyed cheering the dancers on and creating their own cat cookie masterpieces.

Later that evening, KLR families attended the annual Family Literacy Night. Several teachers and fifth grade students read books celebrating a nation of diverse readers, this year's Read Across America theme. The highlight of the evening for many of the students was doing the Cha Cha Slide with Davon.A cat in the hat cookieKLR students making their Cat in the Hat cookies
