Students, staff honor lunch lady heroes

May 5, 2016

Did you know that May 6 is School Lunch Hero Day?

To celebrate, Cooke Elementary welcomed Jarrett J. Krosoczka, creator of the Lunch Lady graphic novels, to talk to students and offer a little special something for its cafeteria staff.

Since the publication of his Lunch Lady series, Krosoczka has visited schools to inspire students. The women and men who work tirelessly in school cafeteria are a fun and selfless bunch who do more than we realize, he told the students.

“They don’t often get the recognition they deserve.”

School officials, together with Krosoczka, hopes the day will inspire kids to make cards or even their own comics for their lunch staff, and will encourage them to always remember to be grateful for their school cafeteria workers.

To help librarians and teachers develop these types of arts and crafts, Krosoczka has created a website where resources—including thank-you cards and other materials that can be downloaded, printed, and shared—will be made available.

Following the assembly, Krosoczka presented the library with a stack of Lunch Lady novels for students to enjoy.
