Fourth-graders get the buzz on beekeeping

May 25, 2016

What’s all the buzz about? Fourth-grade students from Cooke found out earlier this month when beekeepers Michael and Melissa Barrett visited and gave a sweet lesson on honey production and how honey bees are critical links in the chain of how fruits, nuts and vegetables are produced.

On Friday, May 13 Michael and Melissa of Cochecton, NY came in to the George L. Cooke Elementary School to show the students how honey is made.

Students learned about the role of a beekeeper, safe beekeeping practices and were given a crash course in beekeeping equipment, including veils, smokers and supers.

As part of an upcoming STEAM project, students are learning about how the human population affects the honey bee population and how this may impact their future.
