George L. Cooke socks poverty

Feb. 22, 2016

The George L. Cooke School Spirit Committee planned a fun winter event for the students. On February 11, kindergarten, first and second-grade students all joined in an hour of Snuggle Up and Read. The teachers paired up and read to the whole group.Students and teachers pose around sock donations

First-grade teacher, Ms. Jen Nichols, read a popular book about kindness and friendship called: "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink" by Diane DeGroat. The students then had a math graphing activity, a poem writing center using a color word and a rhyming word, and they completed brown bag puppets of the characters in the book and retold the story using their puppets to check for comprehension.

The third, fourth, and fifth graders were invited to a "Sock Hop" complete with a professional DJ from the Spencer Daniels Agency. The students enjoyed the dance and so did all the chaperones! The price of admission to the dance was a new warm pair of socks. Together, 330 pairs of socks were collected and donated to three local foundations to help the less fortunate in our community. All of the students had a wonderful time and want to have this special day again!
