MHS Debate team wins distinctions in Monticello and Maryland…next stop Kentucky!


Daniel Aguirre and Kieran Cavanagh members of the MHS debate team pose with their trophiesThe Monticello High School Debate Team has been winning distinctions up and down the East Coast. The team competed at the 28th annual RJK Debate Tournament, where senior Kieran Cavanagh won first place as speaker and co-champion in Lincoln Douglas Debate (LD), a style of debate with an emphasis on logic, values and philosophy.

Next, the team competed at the Capital Beltway Tournament held in Bethesda, MD on October 23 and 25. At that event, senior Daniel Aguirre was awarded 2nd place as Varsity LD speaker. He earned a 5-1 preliminary record, won three elimination rounds and received full qualification for the New York State championships. He was also awarded his first bid to the upcoming Tournament of Champions to be held at the University of Kentucky.
