Summer renovations are happening at Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School

July 9, 2015

Teachers and students are gone for the summer, but things are still bustling in the Monticello Central School District, where summer work has started on the Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School.

Savin Engineers, P.C, an engineering and construction firm based in Pleasantville, will be working with Monticello Central School District to complete the renovations that were identified in the district’s New York State-mandated Building Condition Survey.

"New York State requires each school district to conduct a Building Condition Survey every five years. This comprehensive review of all district-owned buildings confirms that our facilities are safe,” said Superintendent of Schools Tammy Mangus. “It also gives us valuable insight about the condition of buildings that may require attention in the future. This helps the district manage ongoing maintenance programs and budget for specific upcoming needs, if any.”

Monticello Central School District’s Building Condition Survey began near the end of the 2014-15 school year and is still ongoing.
In the course of the survey, Savin Engineers, P.C discovered non load bearing issues at Rutherford Elementary which require that several walls in the front of the building be replaced.

In New York State, school construction projects require an environmental impact assessment as prescribed by the State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR), who declared that the renovations at Rutherford Elementary are a “Type II Action” and should take effect immediately.

On June 4, the Monticello Board of Education approved SEQR’s resolution and declared that the cost of the renovations would be paid for through the district’s fund balance that was established in May. Click here to read the minutes from the June 4 Monticello Board of Education meeting.

Superintendent Mangus said that contractors are now on-site and work is expected to move forward this week and be completed before the start of the 2015-16 school year.

Updates on the renovation projects will be posted to the district’s website at
