Monticello CSD families invited to attend Parent University barbecue

Students aren’t the only ones going back to class this year

September 5, 2014

Monticello School District will host a free back-to-school barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. at de Hoyos Memorial Park in Monticello to launch Parent University, a district-wide initiative designed to enhance student achievement through the support of family and community. All Monticello students and their families are invited to attend.

“Parent University is based upon the belief that students achieve more when loved ones are involved in their education, and the program is committed to providing engaging and accessible education by strengthening the partnership between home, school and community,” Superintendent of Schools Tammy Mangus said.

"Parent University offers parents and other family members a series of programs that will complement their existing skills and provide opportunities for additional growth to positively contribute to children’s success," said Jane Sorensen, who serves as the EPIC (Every Person Influences Children) parent coordinator for the district’s elementary schools.

The program provides information, connections to community resources and parent development activities on a number of topics, such as adult education, college preparation, job skills, social service, student achievement and technology training.

All of the course offerings and events will be free of charge.

April Resnick, district social worker, feels very optimistic about Parent University.

"Research has shown parents can increase a child's academic success through their involvement in the school and community," she said. "We hope to extend our course offerings as the program grows."

Families can learn more about Parent University at the Sept. 27 barbecue at de Hoyos Memorial Park, which is located on Hay Street in Monticello. The RSVP deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 25. RSVP forms are available here.
