Throughout the year, Teacher in the Spotlight will shine the light on teachers and staff who do exceptional things
for our students and go above and beyond each and every day.

The spotlight is on Amy Garrett!

The next Teacher Spotlight is focused on Amy Garrett, art teacher at George L. Cooke Elementary School.

Ms. Garrett is a very special teacher. She works diligently to make sure the students see the world through "art eyes". Amy works closely with students, giving them time for extra art during the morning. Many of Ms. Garrett's lessons teach all students to see art in our daily lives. She mentors students with behavioral problems, and develops close relationships with many students.

She is an active member of the district wellness committee. The district-wide wellness committee is entrusted with the duty to promote initiatives that raise awareness and encourage everyone in our school community to model healthy behaviors. Ms. Garrett does this, and more!

At the Cooke School, Ms. Garrett works to create a positive culture and climate for her students and colleagues. She is co-founder of the school's spirit committee. This committee has hosted a chili cook-off and bake sale to support purchasing food for the backpack program for students, a school Spirit Newsletter, and "Taco Wednesday" to support colleagues in a Cancer Walk. These are just a few examples of the good work that Ms. Garrett does each and every day.

"Ms. Garrett is a shining example of an active and positive force for the students and staff in our district," Cooke School Principal Sandra Johnson Fields said. "We are very grateful to have someone with her positive spirit and energy as part of our school family."

Congratulations, Ms. Garrett!
