Monticello basketball teams play in Cancer Classic on Feb. 6 and 7

Monti joins local teams in the fight against cancer

January 28, 2015

The 7th Annual Sullivan County BCANY vs. Cancer Classic is set for Feb. 6 and 7 at the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse on the campus of SUNY Sullivan.  This two-day festival features six high school basketball games and is capped off by the SUNY Sullivan men’s and women’s teams taking on the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Monticello's men's basketball teams will play Liberty at 7 p.m.  (JV ) and 8 p.m. (Varsity) on Friday, Feb. 6 (see full schedule below). All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Oncology Unit at the Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC).

This year’s Classic involves teams from seven local high schools (Eldred, Liberty, Monticello, Port Jervis, Roscoe, Sullivan West and Tri-Valley) and two community colleges (SUNY Sullivan and Borough of Manhattan CC).  The Section IX Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) along with SUNY Sullivan and the other participating teams will be using this platform to support the CRMC Oncology Unit so they can continue to provide life-saving programs and services to local cancer patients. Their goal this year is to raise more than $4,000.00, which would make it the most successful weekend in its history.

“Cancer has impacted all of us in some way. This event gives us the opportunity to support members of our community in their fight against cancer.  It is our sincere hope that we can honor their courage and raise their spirits with our effort on the court,” said Chris Russo, Monticello Boys Basketball Coach and BCANY President.

Since its inception the BCANY vs. Cancer Classic has donated over $16,000 to the fight against cancer, including nearly $15,000 to the Oncology Unit at CRMC. Cancer Services Program of Sullivan County provides free breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening to men and women in Sullivan County. The Catskill Regional Medical Center offers excellent cancer care through its Oncology Unit. The hallmark of the program is a multidisciplinary team approach combined with quality cancer care. The program continues to be distinguished by the excellent, compassionate care provide to patients.

“We are very excited to once again host the Classic,” added Chris Depew, SUNY Sullivan Athletic Director.  “SUNY Sullivan is proud to be part of this event and support our community’s hospital and those they are helping.”
