Monticello Central School District’s summer meal program is in full swing and in the span of eight weeks over 36,850 meals will be prepared and distributed to nine different locations. This year, for the first time, hot meals will be served and on the menu is fresh roast turkey with gravy and real mashed potatoes, fresh pizza, cheese burgers and more.

“The demand is high this year, and we are running two delivery trucks; making round trips delivering meals,” explained Food Service Director and Professional Chef Andy Yeomans. “Mr. Teplesky and the Board of Education are extremely concerned about students who face food insecurity when school ends. They have made a concerted effort this year to feed as many children as possible during the summer months.”

Working with local farmers to bring in seasonal produce, Yeomans is in the process of using some locally-grown produce in the meals that are served. “We live in a food-producing part of the world. Why would I buy lettuce grown somewhere else?” Asks Yeomans.

Meals will also be provided this year to Project Excel, Monticello’s Universal Pre-K program. Contracted through Easter Seals (the facilitator of Project Excel), this is the first time the program will utilize the Monticello food service program for summer meals.

“Monticello has the largest summer meal program in the county, and we are proud of the quality food we serve,” said Yeomans. “If one less child is hungry this summer, well, then we are on the right track. I won’t say ‘we’ve done our job’ because our job is never done; if there are hungry kids out there, we’ll do what we can to help feed them.”
