Builders Club Ends Successful Year with Pizza Party

May 30, 2014

The Robert J. Kaiser Middle School Builders Club ended a very busy, successful year with a well-earned pizza party. Club Advisor William Oefelein displayed a slide show depicting all the projects that the club members were involved in this year including:

  • Sending holiday cards to veterans at Castle Point Hospital
  • Selling paper hearts for the Heart-A-Thon and paper pink ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness (to benefit Catskill Regional Medical Center and the hospital’s Women’s Health Center, respectively)
  • Making fleece pillows and delivering them to the residents at the Skilled Nursing Unit at Catskill Regional and
  • Collecting food and toys for the animals and personally delivering them to the Rock Hill SPCA.

The group ended the year by helping out with the Shop Rite Food Collection Day, as well as some of them participating in the Kiwanis One Family Walk for Hunger. Food was solicited and distributed to the various local school backpack programs as well as to the Hudson Valley Food Bank, which serves over 300 sites to help alleviate hunger in Sullivan County and the surrounding Hudson Valley area.

Each member was given a Certificate of Appreciation from Jane Sorensen, Builders Club Liaison/Monticello Kiwanis President. Mrs. Sorensen and Mr. Oefelein congratulated the students for all their hard work, compassion and dedication to the needs of the community. After the certificates were distributed and the pizza devoured, they were pleasantly surprised with a beautiful sheet cake which displayed pictures of some of the activities they were involved in during the year. They got a kick out of seeing photos of themselves on the icing. “Kudos to Builders Club for a Great Year” was appropriately written on the cake.

All the members are looking forward with enthusiasm to new projects in the next school year. This year’s officers were Steven Cammerino, President; Thomas Cammerino, Vice President; David Schneider, Secretary; and Emma Silverstein, Treasurer. The Builders Club is sponsored by the Monticello Kiwanis Club. Their mission is to provide members with opportunities to perform services, build character and develop leadership, all of which are characteristics these young people have demonstrated that they already possess.
