Honoring Hall of Fame Debate Coach Rose Joyce-Turner – Congratulations!

April 30, 2013

After 26 years of guiding hundreds of students to success in dozens of championships, Monticello High School Assistant DebateDebate Coach Hall of Fame Inductee Rose Joyce-Turner Coach Rose Joyce-Turner was inducted into the New York State Debate Coach Association Hall of Fame. Ms. Joyce-Turner was presented with a trophy during a reception at the Horace Mann High School in the Bronx.

The longtime English language arts (ELA) teacher was honored because of her dedication of time, energy and expertise to help youngsters master the craft of debate, critical thinking and public speaking - all of which have helped them excel in their educational and career pursuits.

“I have watched students transform and blossom time and time again in so many positive ways after joining the debate team,” said Ms. Joyce-Turner, who was the head debate coach until three years ago. “The skills learned through debate are extremely important.”

Those skills just happen to already be directly aligned with the new Common Core State Standards that now require classroom learning in ELA to focus on such things as close reading of non-fiction works and evidence-based responses in writing and speaking.

Currently, the debate team is comprised of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors totaling about 25. At its peak, more than 40 students have participated in any year. And although it requires a time and travel commitment, the benefits reaped from the experience have helped Monticello students get into a plethora of fine universities such as Yale, Cornell, Rutgers and Holy Cross. To honor that legacy, the walls of Ms. Joyce-Turner’s classroom are covered in banners from many of the colleges her former debaters have attended.

More information about debate and its connection to the Common Core can be found on the National Forensic League Speech and Debate Honor Society website at
