KLR Fun Friday Assembly Celebrates Life and Courage

March 5, 2013

Kenneth L. Rutherford Elementary School first grade students demonstrated their vigor for life as they enthusiastically cheered their "courage anthem" for the packed gymnasium at the March 1 Fun Friday assembly celebration.KLR Fun Friday

To emulate the event's theme, two courageous people were invited to Fun Friday to speak with students about the personal challenges they have faced. Robert J. Kaiser Middle School student Alexis Bivins shared her story about the courage she found inside herself since being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.

"Courage is doing the right thing when the wrong thing looks good," said Alexis. "It is getting back on the bike after falling off."

Celebrate Life Half Marathon organizer, Myriam Loor, who is also a cancer survivor, spoke with students about what it means to be courageous.

"Life is about believing in yourself," said Ms. Loor. "It is about surrounding yourself with wonderful, caring people."

The first grade classes presented Ms. Loor with artwork they created for the Celebrate Life event. Some youngsters designed posters for the pathway, while others created drawings to be included in the runners' goody bags.

Each month, the school's Fun Friday event is hosted by a different grade level that picks a theme to share with the rest of the school community. At the celebration, certificates are presented to the "Students of the Month" and the "Readers of the Month."

"Earning the honor of being chosen as a student of the month takes courage," said Dana Taylor, KLR's speech therapist, as she presented the award certificates with Assistant Principal John Correa. "It requires that you do the right thing all the time and sometimes, that is not so easy."

After the assembly, Ms. Taylor invited Ms. Loor to read a book about courage to the first grade classes. Students were extremely excited to spend time with their special guest. Several students volunteered to read aloud to the group while they shared passages from the book "Courage" by Bernard Waber.
