September 9, 2011

With the Monticello High School auditorium packed with staff members, new Superintendent of Schools Daniel A. Teplesky beganOpening Day the 2011-2012 school year with an assurance that with the collaboration and commitment of every person in the room, all Monticello students would get the chance to flourish.

“We are at a crossroads. If we move forward with one vision, as one district, together we can become one Monticello,” said Mr. Teplesky. “We will make our decisions based on what is best for our students.”

This school year brings with it the winds of change. From the large turnover of administrative personnel in the Monticello School District, to a fresh-faced NY State Commissioner of Education to the implementation of the new teacher and principal evaluations and Common Core Standards to a 2% tax levy cap that will change the landscape of school budgeting for years to come.
Assistant Superintendent for Student Learning Dr. Kenneth Newman spoke to the crowd about the work that took place during the summer to prepare for many of these changes, some of which are connected to the federal Race to the Top (RTTT) initiative and funding.

“We are working diligently to get our district ready,” said Dr. Newman. “That includes utilizing our data inquiry teams."

According to Dr. Newman, this combined analysis is the basis of the district’s concerted effort to increase student achievement.

To celebrate the commitment of its many long-term staff members, the district presented service award certificates to employees who have served Monticello Schools for 25 years or more. For the most years of service – 41 (so far) – teaching assistant Judy Pugh received a standing ovation from the crowd and a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant of her choice.
