Monticello Educator Honored with Prestigious Award for Excellence

September 26, 2011NP Award Ceremony

Monticello Schools Instructional Technology Integration Specialist Jack Etter was chosen from dozens of educators across the mid-Hudson region to receive the prestigious SUNY New Paltz Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Jack was honored in late September at a ceremony at SUNY New Paltz with six other recipients.

“Although I was surprised to receive such a great honor, my work is a reflection of the collaborative vision of the Monticello Schools technology department,” said Mr. Etter, who has been with Monticello for the past four years.

Jack was nominated by his colleague, Monticello’s Executive Director of Instructional Technology & Staff Development Shelley Rossitto, who wrote, “Since Jack has joined our team, students and teachers have been transformed to technology-literate citizens…[Jack] approaches his work in a creative, fun, engaging and non-threatening way that is also very encouraging.”

The nomination packet also included letters from colleagues, parents and students. One Monticello High School student noted in his support letter that Mr. Etter is a “people friendly” person and will do "whatever it takes to help you focus on your work and be successful.” A colleague in the English department noted how Jack’s “sincere belief in the potential of each and every student…is an inspiration to us all.”

The SUNY New Paltz Dean’s Award began in 1984 as a way to recognize teachers who excel in their chosen fields. Current School of Education Interim Dean Dr. Karen Bell said that the awards are given annually as a way to show how seriously the college views the importance of classroom teachers.

In addition to, and as a part of, this award, Jack was honored on October 12 with an Award of Excellence in Teaching from the Mid-Hudson School Study Council (MHSSC).
