REPORTS TO: Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Building Principals

QUALIFICATIONS: Current NYS Certification in appropriate certification area

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Elementary School Counselor will oversee the expansion of MCSD’s guidance program into the three elementary schools. To that end, the Elementary School Counselor will be responsible for:

  • Continuing to develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program utilizing the ASCA National Model Framework;
  • Using data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs;
  • Communicating the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to appropriate stakeholders (e.g., administrators, teachers, students, and parents);
  • Providing direct services, individual student planning and preventive and responsive services;
  • Managing the elementary counseling program, including system support and system accountability for program components delivered by Social-Emotional Wellness Teachers on Special Assignment, social workers, classroom teachers, and other building personnel;
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals, including restorative practices. Incorporate into the program the life skills that students need to be successful in the twenty-first century;
  • Developing and implementing prevention programs related to current social concerns (e.g., conflict resolution, bullying, peer pressure, parent incarceration) and teaching social and/or cognitive-behavioral skills to individual or groups of students (e.g. problem solving, self monitoring and anger management strategies);
  • Assisting all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans;
  • Provide individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs. Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs;
  • Monitoring student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitating appropriate interventions;
  • Meeting monthly with district guidance counselors and Director of Curriculum;
  • Conducting a yearly program audit to review extent of program implementation and effectiveness. Collect and analyze data to guide program direction and emphasis. Measure results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and share results as appropriate with relevant
