Young musicians
entertain students
As special treat for students, brothers Jared and Aaron Weiss
performed a guitar jam session on the last day of school. It was
a great mini-concert and was enjoyed by all.
Jared, an RJK Middle School
student and Aaron an incoming 5th grader, not only enjoy the
academic rigors of school, but practice on "fine-tuning" their
music abilities as well.
Next year we look forward to
another great show as well as having other students perform.
Young artists shine
through their creative works
Art students, under the tutelage of Ellen McNally, worked on
many projects throughout the past school year. The following is
a description of some of the interesting lessons from which
students created their masterpieces. Kente Cloth-
It is made with paper and overwriter markers. This artwork
represents woven strips of cloth made by the Ashanti people who
live in parts of Ghana and the Ivory Coast. The strips’ of cloth
are sewn together to make
clothing. Ancient
Mayan Glyph designs -
The students made a glyph which is a
symbol that represents a word or a sound) from blocks of wood
and stamping material. Using glyph, they then made a circular
design around a drawing of the animal represented by the glyph.
The ancient Mayans lived in the region of what is present-day
Guatemala, Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras. Picasso
faces- Students
learned about Picasso’s life and many styles of painting. Then,
using oil pastels, they created a portrait done in his Cubist
painting style. Gyotakku
fish prints and stitchery on burlap-
Gyotaku is a Japanese art form in
which the artist does a print of a fish. We used fish replicas
made from plastic. Aboriginal
Sea Turtle-
Students were read the book “Into the Sea,” to learn about sea
turtles and studied the patterns on Aboriginal paintings before
creating their painting/collages. Dinosaur
prints and painting collages-
students made relief printing in
which a print was made from a raised surface. Photo: Students Lauren McFadden, Trevor Mieczkowski, Alli
Bischert, Gabriela Tepan , Monisse Cueva, Cristiane Sacedo,
Edward Murran, Lottie Oestrich and Taylor Gianquinto display
some of their finished works of art.
High school
AP Chemistry students share their love of
science
with Duggan 5th graders
When Jeanine Nielsen’s AP Chemistry class was given the task of
choosing a demonstration that interested them to present to
their peers, they decided to take the assignment one step
further. They approached Nielsen wanting to know if they could
do their demonstrations for some younger students to show them
that science can be exciting. Duggan Principal Patti
Sonnenschein then arranged a field trip with her 5th grade
students and the wheels of science were in motion.
On June 12, "it was an incredible
feeling," for Nielsen as she watched her
students transform into mentors making the fifth-graders cheer
with wonderment. But not only was the younger group awash with
fascination, they also learned that experiments don’t always go
as planned, and when some of the experiments didn't work, it
opened the door for the unexpected.
The afternoon ended with some
outdoor demonstrations that shot into the air and produced loud
bangs and left the Duggan 5th graders with an awe and excitement
about chemistry and science.
Next year Nielsen would like to expand the presentation to
include all of the district elementary schools.
There is a single light of
science, and to brighten it anywhere is to brighten it
everywhere.

Duggan students use song and dance as part
of learning
On May 30, students in Cathy McFadden’s
kindergarten class presented a
performance of song and sign to parents, friends and students
from April Bidwell’s kindergarten class.
The names of
the songs were Every Letter Makes a Sound, Love Grows,
and I Like Ants. The students ended the performance with
a line dance hip-hop cha-cha, which delighted the audience.
Club
Rec giving students a diverse after-school experience Club Rec has been in
existence at the Duggan Elementary School since September 2004.
This after-school program, provided by Footings Inc., is
available to K-5 students. Every afternoon, students are
escorted from their classrooms into the gym for a brief “free
play” session, and then to the cafeteria for a healthy snack.
Homework
assistance is provided daily by a certified teacher. Students
participate in a variety of activities including computer
skills, outdoor education, community connections, cultural
experiences, arts and craft creations, sports and games and
holiday experiences. Students learn about different cultures and
celebrate a variety of holidays including the Chinese New Year
and Cinco de Mayo, as well as sampling different ethnic food.
This year, Club
Rec held a special activity called Birthday Cards for Shane,
which had students create cards for an eight year-old boy with
cancer to help fulfill his wish of breaking the record for the
most birthday cards ever received. Also as part of the diverse
learning program, students were visited by the Kauneonga Lake
Fire Department to discuss fire safety and fire department
careers.
During the
month of June, students will be writing letters to the troops in
Iraq, participating in a variety of outdoor activities and
planning an end-of-the-year barbecue for the children, staff,
and their families.
Club Rec’s
summer program will be held at the Rutherford Elementary School
from July 16- August 10. Club Rec's site coordinator
is Joanne Butenhoff, its certified teacher is Bridgid
Fredericks, and its assistant is Angelica Snyder.
Duggan students test
theories and concepts at Science Fair
The third, fourth and fifth grade students at the Duggan
Elementary razzled and dazzled their teachers, parents and
fellow students with an outstanding display of Science Fair
Projects. Projects included a test for erase-ability, best
insulators, deodorant soaps, paper towels and even perfume.
The scientific method was evident in the many fourth-grade
projects, as this has been the focus of their science
curriculum. One student, Morgan Huebner’s interest in her
father’s profession, working with x-rays, tied her research on
how to read an x-ray with the use of colored cellophane overlays
to see if the clarity of the x-ray would change. Imagine the
delight of all to see that she actually had an x-ray of Homer
Simpson small brain. Christian McCagg expressed his delight with
a second place ribbon for his test of the best eraser. “Since I
make so many mistakes all the time, I just wanted to know which
eraser I should have with me,” expressed Christian. “Besides, I
now know just why my teacher tells us to mark our test papers
lightly until we go back and check. If you don’t have your best
eraser you might smear up the answer sheet!”
Jaime Buscemi delighted the audience with her 20,000 volt Jacob
’s Ladder. “It looks just like something from a Frankenstein
movie, do you think that is how they make that special effect?”
commented Aaron Weiss, fourth grade student as he explained to
the young kindergarten students about insulators. On the other
hand, Dante Smalls received the yucks and groans as he explained
and displayed his fungus riddled potato slices that had been
used to test if deodorant soap worked better than plain soap and
water. Students were fascinated with the biological specimens.
What student does not like to fly paper airplanes? Well, Ryan
Behrent tested the weight and texture of various papers to see
which would make the best folded paper airplane.
Support your child’s curiosity this summer and explore some of
their questions or even test the validity of commercial
messages. Just ask Terrell Gray the next time you see him if
Bounty is the quicker-picker-upper!
Kindergarten
show-and-tell a quacking good time!
To the other students delight, Claudia Seward, a Duggan
Elementary School
kindergartener in Cathy McFadden’s class, brought two four
week-old Khaki Campbell ducklings into school for show-and-tell.
The ducklings, named Lightfoot and Badger, are being raised for
their eggs by Claudia and her family along with four other
ducklings. As part of Claudia’s presentation, she explained how
the ducklings love to swim in the pond and eat lettuce,
strawberries and worms!
Duggan School Dare
graduation a reason to celebrate
On May 4, Duggan Elementary School’s fifth-grade students
graduated from DARE and each was awarded a certificate and a
t-shirt.
DARE essay contest winners: Ashley McEneaney, Taylor Bell,
Anthony Lombardi, Jason Fallick, Jennifer browne, James Terpstra,
Jonathan Harned, and Jordan Maraj read parts of their essays to
the audience - recounting what they had learned from the
program.
In the program, students learned how to resist drugs, tobacco
and alcohol, how to stand-up against negative peer pressure, and
how to resist and avoid violent situations. Deputies Sheerer and
Sergeant Louis Alverez, Sheriff Mike Schiff, Chief Artie Hawker
and Duggan Elementary School Principal Patti Sonnenschein were
there to show their support as students and parents participated
in the graduation.
The Duggan PTO capped off the graduation with a buffet of

PTO book fair goes
BOGO! Duggan Elementary
School's PTO-sponsored Scholastic Book Fair BOGO (buy one get
one free)
was
a big hit with students, parents and teachers alike. The BOGO
concept was used as a way to get books into every classroom and
thus into the hands of all students. PTO treasurer Cathleen
Doherty and volunteer PTO member Tracy O’Neill collected money
for books.
Fifth-grader Cristian Garzon (pictured), a student in Elizabeth
Nicoletti and Sue Mahan’s class, was very excited about his new
purchase. The fair was held for one week with a successful goal
of having every student go home with a book.
Duggan parents JoAnn Peabody, Donna Miller, Andrea Oldfield,
Jacques Alarie, Beth Weiss and Barbara Rooney served as
volunteers. Cathleen Doherty and Cathy McFadden co-chaired the
event. “We couldn’t have had such a successful book fair without
the help of PTO president Elaine Loewe,” said McFadden.
Each year the PTO sponsors two
book fairs, the fall book fair is a fundraiser for the PTO and
the spring fair promotes summer reading.
First-graders hold a
traditional 'Author's Tea'
Maryrose Morey’s first-graders at Cornelius Duggan School
celebrated their
creative writing with an Authors’ Tea.
Family members attended and
listened with delight as Michael Carpinone and other first
graders read their first computer-published books. Carolyn
Price, a student teacher from Oneonta, helped students with
their computer and writing skills.
Students get Irish
dance lesson from professional dancer
In mid-March, students at Duggan Elementary School were treated
to a dance lesson by professional dancer Debbie Birch. By the
end of the lesson, all students in grades K-5 were performing
the Irish Reel Celtic Dance in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day.
Ms. Birch studied dance with Colin
Dunne, the lead dancer from the infamous Riverdance. She began
touring professionally at the age of 17 when she starred in the
musical West Side Story. Her other credits include Annie, South
Pacific, A Chorus Line and Anything Goes.
The students were thrilled to
have such a talented performer come to school to teach them the
dance!

Duggan DARE graduation
scheduled for March
Students in Elizabeth Nicoletti, Susan Mahan and Nancy Parson’s
fifth-grade class participate weekly in the DARE program and are
now preparing for their graduation.
DARE’s mission is to provide the students with the information
and skills they need to keep their lives drug free. It tries to
equip the preteens with the tools they can use to avoid negative
or violent situations that they may encounter in their everyday
lives. The program also focuses on helping them establish
positive relationships among other students, law enforcement
officials, teachers and parents.
Duggan’s fifth-grade class DARE officer is Sullivan County
Deputy Sheriff Cheryl Sheerer. She is a 1998 graduate of
Monticello High School and became a certified School Resource
Officer because she “loves teaching the kids.” She works closely
with Senior DARE officer Sgt. Louis Alvarez, who has worked in
the Monticello School District for more than ten years.
For more information about the DARE program, visit www.dare.org.
Gingerbread fun brings
families together at Duggan
Kindergartners and first Grade students started the holiday
season with their
Annual Gingerbread Festival. Families were invited to join their
children to create unique gingerbread houses with graham
crackers, icing, and candies galore!
This celebration provided a wonderful opportunity for the school
community and the students’ families to be together in an
atmosphere of creativity, conversation, and fun.
Duggan Winter Concert a
musical joy
At the Annual Winter Concert, under the direction of Joyce
Wells, Duggan students sang various holiday and classical
musical selections. Third-grade teacher John Slaver and
Rutherford music teacher Amy Abraham, accompanied the chorus on
guitar and piano.
Students at each grade level sang holiday songs including Frosty
the Snowman, The 12 Days of Christmas, Joyful, Joyful Chanukah,
and Ode to Peace. They also performed choreographed movements to
classical music selections. The movements were created by the
noted music educator John Feierabend. The 4th and 5th grade
choruses and the Gold Recorders also performed. Matt
Brown, Kyle Silva, Jordana Maraj and Jennifer Browne did a
wonderful job as stage crew.
Members of the fifth grade
Chorus are: Ali Vertrees, Anthony Lombardi, Caitlyn Cillis,

Thanksgiving Feast a
delicious event
For more than a week, Duggan Elementary School fifth grade
students were busy preparing for their annual Thanksgiving
Feast. Finally, after peeling potatoes, chopping celery for
stuffing and preparing corn bread mix, students were ready to
decorate the gymnasium for the November 21, festivities.
With the help of faculty members,
Nancy Parsons, Elizabeth Nicoletti and Susan Mahan, each table was
adorned beautifully with a cornucopia and fabric pumpkins.
One group of students learned how to properly set a table with
tablecloths, while others designed and colored Thanksgiving
murals.
Students checked the coats of the
more than 170 attendees that included school administrators,
Board of Education members, teachers, parents and other family
members.
A delicious dessert of fruit and
pumpkin pies were donated by some of the students' families.
A special thanks to school Principal Mrs. Sonnenschein for all
her hard work to make this a successful event.
Duggan School students
and staff celebrated Halloween in a big way
The costumed event included a
parade, games and lots of goodies! Family members were invited
to participate in the day's activities.
Students
had a fun time and truly enjoyed the day!
Local Fire Departments
help teach students about safety
On November 7, the Duggan Elementary School K-5 students had the
opportunity to learn about fire safety from the Kauneonga Lake,
White Lake and Smallwood-Mongaup Valley Volunteer Fire
Departments. While the students attended a short assembly,
firefighters crawled into the auditorium to demonstrate how they
search a home with their special tools and personal firefighter
safety equipment. They explained to students how and when to
check and service their home fire extinguishers and that if the
extinguishers are more then five years old, they should be
replaced.
Students were advised that
in
case of a fire at their homes they should discuss and practice
with their parents where they should meet outside. Students were
shown burned smoke detectors from homes that were occupied and
in which lives were saved. They were reminded that in their home
smoke detectors, every time the clocks are changed to daylight
savings time, the batteries should be changed. Students were
then taken outside to examine the tanker, rescue and hose truck.
The volunteer firefighters that helped with the presentation
were Anthony Franco, Richard Morey, Bill Katzenberger, and
Charles Stackhouse from White Lake, and Mark Pennell (chief),
Pete Maltese, Bill Gettel, Jerry Kallman and Frank Di Constanzo
from Kauneonga Lake. Smallwood Volunteer firefighters included
Deirdre Brennan, George Roosevelt and Joe Bonnaci and John
Scanlon. As a follow-up activity, the students in all the
classes wrote thank you letters to the firefighters.
Fall Festival at
Duggan
The kindergarten and first grade classes at the Duggan
Elementary School celebrated a Fall Festival on Thursday,
October 26. Family members were invited to enjoy an evening of
games and songs. The children created scary pumpkin and ghost
paper lanterns. Refreshments of donuts and apple juice added to
the atmosphere of family, friendship, and fun!
"Officer Phil"
safety program featured at district elementary schools
The
Monticello Police Department, with support from local
businesses, presented a safety assembly called "Officer Phil".
The new concept, that illustrates the necessity of obeying rules
set by parents and society, provides students with positive
solutions to problems encountered within today's society. The
program included magic tricks, humor, and an animated program
with a mouse puppet named Mack.
Mack discussed
'stranger danger', bus safety, how to cross streets safely, and
how to answer a phone when an adult is not present. A game show
activity allowed two students to face off each other in
answering questions about being a bully or a buddy.
District
officials are extremely thankful for the businesses that
supported this program, as well as the Monticello Police
Department's dedication to protect and communicate the
importance of being responsible citizens and members of the
community.
