Re-establishing trust with an open ear and mind

October 2006

Local parent Amy Kristt discusses important issues with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel.

The recent Superintendent’s Parents Advisory Committee meeting was a strong beginning to establishing an open dialog between parents and the top administration of the Monticello School District. With more than twenty people in attendance, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel answered questions about a variety of topics, including the budget shortfall and a plan of action for the future.

One parent who attended the meeting, computer network specialist, Amy Kristt, had nothing but positive feedback from the event. “If parents can have an open line of communication with the school’s top administrator, this is going to make a huge difference in our district,” stated Kristt. “He really made us feel welcome and seemed genuinely interested in our concerns.”

According to Kristt, Dr. Michel explained that he was also a parent with children in the district schools and that the groups’ concerns were his concerns as well. And in an effort to help strengthen the on-going dialog between meeting dates or to ask any forgotten questions a parent may have had, Kristt helped Dr. Michel compile an e-mail mailing list (listserv) of all the attendees.

For Dr. Michel, he is determined to follow through on his Opening Day promise of re-establishing trust in the community by giving the district transparency and creating many opportunities for direct communication among parents, community members and school officials. Soon he hopes to take the process one step further by establishing a Superintendent’s Students Advisory Group as well. He also has plans to create a Citizen’s Advisory Budget Committee (CABC) to help guide the district in its decision making processes of next year’s budget formation.

All parents and community members are invited and encouraged to attend the next meeting of the Superintendent’s Parents Advisory Committee, scheduled for Wednesday, November 29, at 7 p.m. in the RJK Middle School cafeteria.

For more information about any of these meetings or to be added to the listserv, please contact Dr. Michel at 794-7700.

More about the Superintendent's Parents Advisory Committee meeting

On October 17, fifteen community parents made their way through the pouring rain to meet once again with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel.

The evening's topics included, educating children to be prepared for the global economy and what questions parents should be asking the schools.

Dr. Michel presented a report on high school reform and discussed how the new Freshman Experience for incoming ninth graders, and the very successful Academy of Finance, are just the beginning of the restructuring of Monticello's programs.  The group also discussed the benefits of on-line courses for high school students.

Community members and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend these ongoing discussions.
