Monticello Schools'
Citizen's Advisory Budget Committee (CABC) off to a good start
February
2007
(back)
With the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School cafeteria filled with more
than 50 people, Monticello’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick
Michel and Board of Education President Alyce Van Etten opened the
inaugural meeting of the Citizens' Advisory Budget Committee.
The committee is a way of opening new doors of communication with
taxpayers and getting residents actively involved in the school
budget process. With Dr. Michel setting the guidelines for discussion,
the group delved head-first into the budgetary challenges and
growing needs of the district.
As an open and honest dialogue began, community members were not shy
to talk about their concerns and struggles as possible tax increase
figures were outlined. They were also very outspoken and expressive
about the fact that this was the first time they’ve been given a
voice in the budget development process. Many in the audience
commended Dr. Michel for his open-door policy and the creation of an
atmosphere of transparency within the district.
Elementary school principals gave a presentation on the needs of
their schools and an open forum Q&A session followed. Discussions
will continue at the next meetings. District administrators and the
Board of Education want to address the issues of the community and
are urging residents to come out and participate.
