October is National Fire Prevention Month. Nation-wide, public service departments join forces to spread the word about fire safety and to remind their communities to examine their fire prepardness, and check their smoke alarm batteries.

Students at George L. Cooke Elementary School were among thousands in the country to participate in fire safety education, thanks to a visit from firefighters from the Monticello Fire Department.

The firefighters taught students how to "stop, drop and roll" in the event their clothes catch on fire, and taught them about the importance of smoke detectors. Firefighter Jim Gerrard spoke with students about all different types of firefighter gear and its function, as Cooke employee and firefighter Casey Titus demonstrated.

The Cooke community appreciates the dedication of the Monticello Fire Department in keeping our students, and the greater Monticello community safe both at home and at school.
