Inaugural Tinsel Trot 5k to be held in December

Nov. 6, 2015

The Monticello Teacher’s Association (MTA) will hold a Tinsel Trot 5k Fun Run. The event will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015 at 10 a.m. on Rock Hill Road in Rock Hill, NY.

Several years ago, Monticello High School English teacher John Maranzana participated in The Christmas Story Race in Cleveland, OH, along with a few other members of the MTA. The race, which is a tribute to the classic movie, “A Christmas Story”, raises money for the Christmas Story House and other Cleveland charities. Participants in the race wear whimsical, holiday-themed costumes. The members of the MTA who participated in the race were inspired to bring the fun back with them to Sullivan County.

“We (the MTA) thought this might be a great platform to accomplish some noteworthy goals such as engaging in community outreach and charity, promoting fitness and generating some holiday cheer and spirit in our community,” Maranzana said.
The first 100 participants will receive a long-sleeve t-shirt with the race’s logo as well as a participation medal. Participants should don their yuletide best and dress up in a holiday-themed costume.

Proceeds from the race will go toward the MTA scholarship fund, which awards annual funds to high school graduates; and the Sullivan County Federation for the Homeless.

“We are hoping to be able to make a generous donation to the federation because we are all acutely aware of the importance that this organization plays in our community year round. Although the holiday season brings homelessness to the forefront for charitable giving, poverty and need are not seasonal issues, but unfortunately steady concerns,” Maranzana said.

The Tinsel Trot is being held with support from the Rock Hill Business Association and Rock Hill Fire Department.
