District moving ahead with tennis court project

Sept. 4, 2015

There’s been plenty of behind-the-scenes activity in the five months since district residents approved a proposal to build six state of the art tennis courts on a site near the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School and Monticello High School campus.

Architects with Savin Engineers – along with Director of Facilities and Operations John Travis and Assistant Superintendent for Business Lisa Failla – are preparing the courts’ plans and specifications to be submitted to the New York State Education Department (NYSED) by Dec. 1, 2015. Once submitted, state approval of the project is expected to take about 12 weeks.

In the meantime, soil borings will soon be taken in areas near the middle and high school campus. Mrs. Failla told school board members Thursday, Sept. 3 that Savin Engineers will also conduct an area survey of the site and surrounding athletic fields. The soil borings and area survey will not interfere with any athletic activity and will not disrupt students’ schedules, she said.

In addition, the district will be preparing construction bid specifications, so that bids can be awarded and work can begin immediately following NYSED’s response expected sometime in February 2016. It is anticipated that construction will begin near the end of winter, continue through summer, and be completed by Oct. 31, 2016.
