According to the new director of transportation, Helen S. Herbert, she is ready to bring her extensive experience and energy to Monticello, just in time for the start of another school year. Ms. Herbert has been serving as assistant director of transportation at Monticello for one year, and feels ready to take on the challenges of heading the department.

“During this past year in Monticello, I have learned many things, but the single most important thing I have discovered is what a great transportation team we have in the school district. The staff is wonderful and I look forward to working with them and administration to help change the face of our transportation department in the years to come,” Herbert said.

Ms. Herbert came to Monticello in 2014 from First Student, Inc., where she served as Hudson Valley Safety Manager for 11 years. In this position, Ms. Herbert was responsible for all aspects of safety for 15 locations. Prior to her position at First Student, Inc., she was employed by Wallkill Valley School Bus Services, Inc. from 1989-2003, where she served in various positions including, bus driver, 19A certified examiner, school bus driver instructor, attendant instructor, dispatcher and safety coordinator. Ms. Herbert served in the United States Coast Guard from 1983–1988 as a Yeoman – 3rd Class Petty Officer.

She is a member of the New York State Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT).

“Helen is a wonderful addition to the Monticello family,” Superintendent of Schools Tammy Mangus said. “She brings extensive experience and a true sense of caring to the department and the district as a whole, and I congratulate her on earning this new position.”

Ms. Herbert credits her mother for her strong work ethic. “My mother was my greatest inspiration; she raised six children, while earning a master’s degree in education,” stated Herbert.

Ms. Herbert lives in Walden with John, her husband of 24 years. Collectively, they have two daughters and five grandchildren.
