K-Kids, Builders Club, Key Club… by any name or age group, the students who participate in youth programs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club know a thing or fifty about paying it forward.

On June 11, members of the Builders Club flocked to the Robert J. Kaiser Middle School cafeteria for a pizza party to celebrate their successful year of community service. Jane Sorensen, Builders Club Liaison/Monticello Kiwanis President and William Oefelein, School Advisor took pleasure in presenting students with a Certificate of Appreciation for all of their hard work, compassion and dedication to meeting the needs of the community.

The students were so pleased that district Superintendent Tammy Mangus was at the party to congratulate them. She wanted to hear directly from the kids what they had accomplished this year. The list is impressive.

In this school year alone, the 26 members of the Robert J. Kaiser Builders’ Club sold paper hearts for the Heart-A-Thon that benefits Catskill Regional Medical Center (CRMC,) collected money and bought toys for Sullivan County United Way Project Care Program, and collected and delivered food and toys for the animals of the Rock Hill SPCA. They also visited the Skilled Nursing Unit at CRMC where they presented the residents with beaded jewelry that they made and entertained residents with songs. The club ended the year by helping out with the Shop Rite Food Collection Day and participating in the Kiwanis One Family Walk for Hunger. They also collected and distributed food to benefit the school backpack programs, Sullivan County United Way and The Food Bank of the Hudson Valley.
