New Jersey educators visit MHS Academy of Finance

teachers observe volunteer income tax assistance program

June 3, 2014

During the summer of 2013, Monticello AOF teachers, Mrs. Bahrenburg and Mrs. Swaine, attended a National Academy Foundation conference where they met Dana Rivas, a coordinator of NAF Academies in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Ms. Rivas is interested in starting a VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program in her Academy of Finance and was enthusiastic about visiting Monticello High School to see our VITA in action. She, along with AOF teachers Emily Manley and Norma Diaz, drove to Monticello on April 5 to observe the students preparing tax returns for community members and to get their questions answered. The students were very receptive to having the teachers witness their important work of preparing accurate tax returns for the days’ clients.

In a word, Ms. Rivas thought the MHS students were "amazing." She and her colleagues were impressed by the students’ professionalism and the way they went about their task. During this tax season, the seventh year for the MHS VITA site, the students prepared 156 tax returns with net refunds of over $124,600.
