Inaugural Hall of Distinction and National Honor Society Induction Ceremonies combine to celebrate accomplishments, recognize achievements

Ten distinguished current and former members of the Monticello community will be recognized this Sunday (Nov. 3) for their achievements in business, education, community service and the arts at the inaugural MCSD Hall of Distinction Ceremony.

The ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Monticello High School National Honor Society, who will welcome 27 new members to the organization. Established in 1921, The National Honor Society honors students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.

This event is open to the public and begins at 11 a.m. in the Arnold Packer Hughes Auditorium at Monticello High School. Guest speakers will include United States Congressman Chris Gibson, New York State Senator John J. Bonacic and New York State Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther.

The Monticello Central School District Hall of Distinction honors highly successful graduates, former students and former employees who have achieved distinction, outstanding accomplishments or made significant contributions within their school, family, career, community and/or personal lives.

Commemorative plaques will be displayed on the newly built wall in the Hall of Distinction located in the lobby of the Arnold Packer Hughes Auditorium. The oak structure was designed by Chelsea Wayman and selected from designs submitted by the Applied Tech Sciences and Skills Class to the Hall of Distinction Selection Committee. The design was then constructed by students with the assistance and supervision of technology instructor Wells Schope. The following students helped create the new structure: Christopher Bair, Gerardo Barrera Giron, Thomas Boyle, Jesse Conklin, Matthew Dennis, Max Heimowitz, Jacob Lilley, Bailey Mitchell, Jacob Moore, Mark Morris, James Schultz, Frank Smith, Christopher Sprague, Chelsea Wayman and Wolf Wolbeck.

“We are proud to unveil the new Hall of Distinction, and we are especially pleased to welcome these impressive people back to their hometown to be honored in this special way,” said Superintendent of Schools Daniel A. Teplesky. “The inductees represent all that is wonderful about Monticello: compassion, integrity and professionalism. On behalf of the Board of Education and the Monticello Central School District, I would like to congratulate our inaugural inductees,” he added.

The Monticello Central School District Hall of Distinction was established in 2012 by the Board of Education as a way to honor graduates or attendees who have made a lasting and outstanding contribution to society upon graduating or leaving the Monticello Central School District. Former teachers and staff members whose professionalism and commitment went above and beyond standard expectations are also recognized. Recipients of the award will be selected annually.

Former students, community members, business associates and family members were among those who submitted applications in support of potential inductees. The applications were then carefully reviewed by a selection committee to ensure that they met the criteria for inclusion in the Hall of Distinction. Information to support the nomination such as achievements/awards; examples of how the individual serves as a role model; contributions made to society; and letters of recommendation were also required of all applicants.

The 2013 Hall of Distinction Committee is comprised of various stakeholders in the Monticello community and includes the following: Susan Purcell, Alyce Van Etten, Robert Bellamy, Cathleen Doherty, Jonathon Farrow, Martin Miller, Les Kristt, Lewis Kaufman, Robert Green, Denise Cedeira, Dr. Randy Katz, Dana Taylor, Lori Orestano-James, Christine Worthington, and Robert Harding.

Congratulations to our 2013 Inductees!
