Employment opportunities in the Monticello School District

Substitute opportunities

The Monticello School District maintains a master list of substitute teachers, teaching assistants, teacher aides, monitors, typists, registered nurses and food service workers. This list is used by each of the schools to contact substitutes when a regular employee is absent.

Substitute teachers

Preference is given to substitutes who have a valid New York State permanent teaching certificate or provisional certificate. Undergraduates in college are also eligible if they are in their junior year or better. The district also contacts at least three professional references prior to adding an applicant to the substitute list.

Substitute teaching rates for the 2005-06 school year are as follows:

  • Certified with Masters, $75 per day

  • Certified (without Masters), $75 per day

  • Non-certified, $65 per day

  • School nurse (R.N. or L.P.N.), $75 per day

Consecutive Days

After fifteen consecutive days, a substitute replacing the same teacher will receive (starting on the 16th day) a daily rate of 1/200 of Step 1 of the teachers contract. In order to qualify for this adjustment, the substitute must have the degree and certification needed to be placed on a regular teacher's salary schedule. This does not apply to non-certified substitutes. Non-certified substitutes will continue on a per diem rate of $65 per day for the duration of their assignment.

If after completing an assignment running more than 15 consecutive days, the substitute is placed by the district in another long-term replacement, the substitute will continue at the daily rate of 1/200 of  Step 1. (The new assignment must be in the same subject areas.  For example, an elementary assignment, followed by a second elementary assignment.)

The following also applies:
1.  The practice of increasing pay to $1 more per day after every 100 days of subbing in the district was discontinued, effective Sept. 1, 1996.

2. Every substitute teacher who is presenting receiving more than the previous base pay (due to substituting more than 100 days in the district) will continue to receive the amount earned under the previous guidelines. In addition, their base pay will increase to the amount outlined below:

                                                          Previous                     Present
Non-certified                              $48 per day                 $65 per day
Certified                                        $50 per day                 $75 per day
Cert. with Master's Degree    $52 per day                  $75 per day

This pay scale will be reviewed by the Board of Education in July of every year.
