Safety suggestions for Halloween

Return to parenting info

Nothing would take the "fun" out of Halloween more than a serious accident. Please go over these safety rules with Trick or Treaters before they go out.

  • Competent adult supervision must be provided
  • Know the neighborhood--give it a pre-check
  • Never trick or treat alone
  • Take weather conditions into consideration
  • Set a time limit
  • DO NOT EAT ANY UNSEALED OR UNWRAPPED FOOD OR CANDIES OR FRUIT
  • Instruct children not to go into homes/apartments
  • Keep away from strange animals
  • Follow the rules of pedestrian safety--Don't depend on others to watch out for your safety.
  • SAFE COSTUMING: Material should be flameproof and only fire-resistant paper should be used. Colors should be light and should contain reflective material or tape. If Jack-O-Lanterns are carried, light it with a flashlight and not a candle.  Costumes should be the right size and length to avoid tripping.
  • When walking along the road, carry a flashlight.
