Students Connecting to - and Helping - the Local Community
November 28, 2011
The Interact Club at Monticello High School is the student arm of the local Rotary Club. This group of benevolent youngsters helps with fundraising and outreach projects. These extraordinary teens are committed to helping those who are less fortunate within their communities.
Student volunteers - many of whom are members of the Interact
Club - recently spent their Saturday afternoon collecting food
for the homeless and hungry at the ShopRite supermarket in
Monticello. Under the guidance of high school teacher Pam
Sussman, the teens received enough food to fill two dozen
oversized cartons. In addition, they were given four frozen
turkeys and $360 in cash donations - and that was in just one
afternoon! Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of community
members, the items collected helped the United Way of Sullivan
County and the Federation for the Homeless feed the many
individuals and families struggling in these tough economic
times.
“No family - no child - should ever go hungry,” said Ms. Sussman. “This is just a small part of giving back to our community.”
Along with the volunteers from Monticello, students and teachers from the Fallsburg and Wallkill Central School Districts helped with this endeavor.
