Monticello High School teacher reassigned after allegations of inappropriate behavior with student
June 2009
On Wednesday, June 3, Monticello High School Principal Arleene
Siegel was notified by one of her teachers that a female student
had reported various incidents of inappropriate behavior by one
of the school’s teachers.
Ms. Siegel immediately called in district administrators and
launched an investigation. The Monticello Police Department was
contacted.
It has been alleged that the male teacher had inappropriate
contact with a 17 year-old female high school student this past
weekend.
School officials removed the teacher from all classroom duties
and contact with students until the police and district
investigation is completed.
“Above all, the district is concerned for the safety of our
students,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel.
“We have no tolerance for the type of unprofessional behavior
that has been alleged.”
State law requires that district officials report such
allegations to the New York State Education Department to
determine whether a teacher’s license should be revoked.
As with all employees who interact with students, the district’s
standard practice of conducting an extensive pre-employment
investigation before hiring was followed in this case. That
included a background check for a criminal record, multiple
professional and personal references, a series of interviews and
fingerprinting.
A letter to parents of all Monticello High School students will
be sent home. In-school counselors have been made available to
students.
