Mrs. Alyce Van Etten, President of the Monticello Central School
Board of Education has announced that Eileen P. Casey,
Superintendent of Schools, has informed the Board of her plans
to retire effective October, 2006.
At the time of Ms. Casey’s retirement, she will have completed
37 years of service to the Monticello Central School district
including the last 13 years as Superintendent of Schools.
Ms. Casey, who was born in Monticello, served as a Kindergarten
teacher at the Cooke School in Monticello from 1969-1981 when
she was appointed Teacher/Administrator at the Chase School in
Wurtsboro. In 1984, she was appointed Principal of the Chase
School, a position which she held until 1988 when she was
appointed Assistant Superintendent of Schools. In 1993, she was
appointed Superintendent of Schools.
During Ms. Casey’s tenure as Supt. of Schools, she led the
district through researching, developing, and implementing two
major facilities projects. The first was approved in 1997. This
$34.1 million project resulted in a new 900 student Middle
School as well as renovations and additions to all elementary
schools and Monticello High School. In addition, this project
provided for a $3.75 million instructional technology
implementation. Also, through this project the libraries of each
school were upgraded and expanded.
In order to gain additional revenues for the school District,
Ms. Casey forged a relationship with Sullivan County BOCES,
which enabled the Monticello School District to enter into an
extended agreement to lease the Middle School on St. John Street
to Sullivan County BOCES for their programs.
Ms. Casey also developed a partnership with Easter Seals to
lease part of the St. John Street building. For the past 4
years, Easter Seals has provided a Universal Pre-K program for
the students of the district in that location.
The second facilities project, costing $13.1 million, was
approved by the voters in 2003. This project provided extensive
upgrading of the district infrastructure including replacement
of roofs in all buildings, extensive paving throughout the
district, addition of several classrooms to the High School, air
conditioning and a new sound system for the HS/MS auditorium.
This project was implemented over a four year period and will
enter its final phase during the 2005-2006 school year.
During Ms. Casey’s tenure, the district implemented parent and
community newsletters which are mailed to parents and residents
in order to share district information and to assist parents in
their efforts to support their children’s education. The
Monticello Central School District website was developed during
Ms. Casey’s tenure and provides district residents as well as
newcomers with a wealth of information about the school
district.
Also during Ms. Casey’s tenure, the District has applied for and
received several very significant state and federal grants. This
summer, Ms. Casey received notification that the district has
received a Smaller Learning Communities Federal Grant which will
provide the district with almost $800,000 over a period of 5
years to establish smaller learning communities at Monticello
High School. This additional funding will assist the district in
more effectively meeting the needs of the students at Monticello
High School.
