Monticello Schools Board of Education releases findings of Capacity and Demographics studies

February 2010BOE meeting 2/4

At the February 4 meeting of the Monticello Schools Board of Education, the consultant who conducted the Capacity and Demographics studies, Dr. Paul M. Seversky of AdvisorySolutions, gave a presentation to a room full of community members explaining his methodology and findings.

Audience members were given a chance to review the study and ask questions. BOE President Alyce Van Etten explained to the crowd that the Board and district officials had not discussed Mr. Seversky's findings and that at this time no actions based on the study were being considered.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patrick Michel gave a short presentation about how the Governor's proposed 5% cut to Monticelllo's 2010-2011 state aid would leave the district $2.3 million short. He explained that if the Board wanted to go with a rollover budget (nothing taken away and nothing added from this year) that would still require a $2.7 million or 3.5% budget increase - which could translate to a double-digit tax levy increase for property owners.

Dr. Michel explained that in order to present a budget with a 0% tax levy increase, the Board would have to make more than $5 million in cuts.
