Music Program
Name:
Daniel Ryan
Position &
school(s): Vocal/General music at RJK & Fine Arts program
at MHS
How long have you been teaching?
This is my first year teaching.
Where did you go to college? What
degrees do you hold? I went to college at SUNY Fredonia in
Fredonia, NY. I hold a Bachelors Degree in Music Education.
Any awards/accomplishments? Any claims
to fame? Plenty of accomplishments, but no claim to fame
as of yet. To be honest, I'm not sure that I'm particularly
interested in being famous.
What's your favorite part of your job?
I am excited to teach music, but character is even more
important to me. Character stays with you long after all the
definitions and information have gone from your memory. We are
remembered for the content of our character; it is our character
that speaks for us. Having the opportunity to help form that,
even a small opportunity, is my favorite thing about being a
teacher.
Why did you become a music teacher?
I've wanted to be a teacher long before I can even remember
when. Music was a natural fit. I've always enjoyed making music.
With me, music just happens; I don't need to set it aside, to
schedule a time for music. Music happens in the shower, in the
hallway, in the supermarket; it always is happening in me or
through me. Who wouldn't want to teach something so pervasive?
Did you do anything else before you
became a music teacher? I've previously as a support
worker for a group home of developmentally disabled adults
through the Orange County AHRC, and I have also worked at the
Inspire School in Goshen as a Teacher's Assistant working with
pre-schoolers with developmental disabilities. More recently, I
spent this past summer at the Center for Discovery, working as a
Teaching Associate for a classroom of 12 to 16 year-olds with a
variety of developmental disabilities.
In your opinion, why do you think music
education is important? It is important to teach and pass
on those things which define and enhance our humanity. There are
few things as universally communicable, and as readily
available, as music. Something so ubiquitous has great power and
importance.
Who is your favorite musician? I
really don't have a favorite. I enjoy all sorts of music. Some
favorites include Johnny Cash, AC/DC, Tim McGraw and Switchfoot.
What CD is in your CD player right now?
I drove in to work this morning singing along to AC/DC's
"For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)".
What are your hobbies? SCUBA
diving, fixing up my house and taking care of my dog, Bailey
(which is always a challenge).
What advice would you offer to an
aspiring musician? 1.) Do your best to maintain your
optimism. 2.) Work hard at developing your craft. 3.) Make time
every so often to do something other than music. 4.) Pray.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I'm just happy to be here. I enjoy my job everyday, and try to
show it. Thanks for having me.
