Who's Who: Margo Marusek

Name: Margo Marusek

Position & school(s): Vocal/General elementary music teacher, Emma C. Chase

How long have you been teaching? I've completed 6 years.

Where did you go to college? What degrees do you hold?
I majored in Music at Mount Holyoke College and then went to Boston University for my Masters in Music. I also studied at the University College in Cork Ireland.

Any awards/accomplishments?
I was recently awarded the 2010 Jenö Ádám Scholarship for Kodály study on behalf of the Organization of American Kodály Educators.

Any claims to fame?
I earned several music scholarships over the years, studied under harpist Ann Hobson Pilot amongst others, performed as a harpist with a variety of nonprofessional chamber ensembles, pit orchestras, as well as larger university ensembles under the direction of a number of excellent conductors. I can also wiggle my ears.

What's your favorite part of your job?
I enjoy observing students as they progress in their musicianship and music literacy. I also enjoy hearing children singing voluntarily (down hallways, at recess, etc.).

Why did you become a music teacher?
I became a music teacher because I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to build strong musical skills in the primary grades of school, and I want to help foster that skill development.

Did you do anything else before you became a music teacher?
I studied, did office work, worked with toddlers and spent time studying music abroad.

In your opinion, why do you think music education is important?
I think it's important to exercise our musical muscles from an early age, and build skills to give everyone the right to lifelong musicianship.

How has music influenced your life? Music has brought passion, inspiration, discipline, understanding and depth to my life experience. It has also given me a place to respond to life expressively. I have always cherished the musical opportunities and experiences in my life.

Who is your favorite musician?
I do not have a favorite. I recommend listening to the soloist Gwyneth Wentink.

What CD is in your CD player right now?
Jill Trinka's "Little Black Bull."

What are your hobbies?
I enjoy playing the harp, running, skiing, hiking, and travelling.

What advice would you offer to an aspiring musician?
Practice effectively, believe in yourself and develop a sensitive ear.
